Miramar Brewing is tapping into one of Germany’s classic wheat beer traditions with El Tranque Hefeweizen, a 5% ABV unfiltered Hefeweizen brewed with traditional techniques, German malts and plenty of expressive yeast character.

Brewed with 100% German Weyermann malts, El Tranque Hefeweizen leans into the characteristics that define the style. Banana and spicy clove lead the fermentation profile, while its cloudy appearance, suspended yeast and silky texture complete the classic Hefeweizen experience.

There’s a distinctly Puerto Rican side to the release, too. The label artwork celebrates island culture while connecting it with the German brewing tradition behind the beer.

What to Expect

Expect a Hefeweizen that respects the traditional German characteristics of the style.

Banana and clove take center stage, backed by soft wheat malt, low bitterness and the smooth texture that comes from its unfiltered presentation.

It’s cloudy, silky, refreshing and easy to drink, a combination that should make El Tranque particularly well suited to Puerto Rico’s warm climate.

El Tranque Hefeweizen Aroma & Flavor Profile

Aroma

El Tranque Hefeweizen leads with the expressive fermentation character that makes the style so recognizable.

Expect ripe banana and spicy clove at the forefront, creating the familiar fruit-and-spice combination of a traditional German Hefeweizen. Rather than relying on hops for aromatic intensity, the yeast and fermentation process do most of the work here.

Malt Character

Miramar Brewing uses 100% German Weyermann malts, providing an appropriately German foundation for El Tranque.

The malt character is soft and wheat-forward, supporting the beer’s yeast-derived flavors without adding excessive sweetness or weight. It’s a subtle foundation designed to let the fermentation character remain front and center.

Yeast Character

This is where El Tranque Hefeweizen really comes into its own.

Miramar incorporates a ferulic rest into the brewing process, helping encourage the spicy clove character associated with traditional Hefeweizen yeast.

A stepped fermentation further promotes development of the beer’s characteristic banana and clove notes, creating that classic interplay between fruity esters and spicy phenols.

It’s a great example of how fermentation itself can provide some of the most distinctive flavors in a beer.

Body & Finish

El Tranque Hefeweizen is unfiltered and naturally cloudy, with yeast remaining in suspension.

That yeast contributes to the beer’s particularly silky texture, while the overall body remains light and refreshing.

At 5% ABV, it should finish without excessive weight or alcohol warmth, keeping the emphasis on wheat, banana, clove and easy drinkability.

Puerto Rican Culture Meets German Brewing Tradition

El Tranque’s connection between Puerto Rico and Germany goes beyond the beer itself.

The label artwork, created by Padín Sosa, pays homage to Puerto Rican culture and one of the island’s most recognizable social traditions: playing dominoes.

The scene features a Puerto Rican character enjoying a Hefeweizen, surrounded by elements associated with island life, including a traditional Puerto Rican house, flamboyant tree and rooster.

It gives the release a distinctly local identity while the beer inside remains firmly connected to its German roots.

Best Enjoyed With

The combination of wheat, fruit, spice and restrained bitterness makes El Tranque Hefeweizen an easy beer to pair with food.

Try it alongside bratwurst or grilled sausages, schnitzel, roast pork, grilled chicken or lighter seafood dishes. The refreshing wheat character can also work particularly well alongside mildly spicy foods.

Of course, given the inspiration behind the label, pouring an El Tranque alongside a game of dominoes seems particularly appropriate.

Where to Find El Tranque Hefeweizen

El Tranque Hefeweizen is available on draft and in 16 oz cans.

As with any local craft beer release, availability can change, so check with Miramar Brewing or your favorite Puerto Rico craft beer spot for current availability.

PRBG Final Pour

El Tranque Hefeweizen shows Miramar Brewing taking a traditional style seriously while giving the overall release an unmistakably Puerto Rican identity.

Banana and clove provide the classic Hefeweizen signature, while 100% German Weyermann malts, a ferulic rest, stepped fermentation and an unfiltered presentation reinforce the beer’s traditional German foundation.

The Padín Sosa label then brings Puerto Rico into the story, using dominoes and familiar island imagery to connect two very different cultural traditions.

At 5% ABV and 14 IBU, El Tranque Hefeweizen promises plenty of yeast-driven character while remaining silky, refreshing and easy to drink; German brewing tradition with a Puerto Rican sense of place.
