Oktoberfest season has arrived at Takabrú, and Bávara Märzen puts a distinctly Puerto Rican spin on one of Germany’s classic fall beer styles.

Brewed as a 5.4% ABV Märzen with 33 IBU, Bávara starts with the toasted malt character and smooth drinkability associated with the traditional style before introducing something unexpected: a bright touch of mandarin citrus.

It’s Takabrú’s interpretation of Bavarian tradition through a Puerto Rican lens—a beer designed for Oktoberfest celebrations while refusing to play things completely by the book.

A Märzen With a Mandarin Twist

Traditional Märzen is built around malt. Toasted bread, biscuit, caramel-like richness and a smooth lager finish typically take center stage, with hops playing a supporting role.

Bávara keeps that foundation intact but adds a distinctly different dimension.

Takabrú describes the beer as inspired by both Bavarian tradition and the Puerto Rican spirit of celebrating it in our own way. That philosophy comes through in the addition of mandarin character, bringing a fresh citrus accent to an otherwise malt-driven Oktoberfest beer.

Rather than turning Bávara into a fruit beer, the citrus appears intended to complement the traditional malt profile and brighten the finish.

Aroma & Flavor Profile

Aroma

Expect gently toasted malt aromas up front, accompanied by a light mandarin citrus note.

That combination should give Bávara a familiar Märzen foundation while adding a fresher aromatic edge than you would typically expect from the style.

Malt Character

Moderate, with lightly toasted and subtly sweet malt flavors providing the beer’s backbone.

Hop Presence

Low to moderate. At 33 IBU, Bávara should have enough bitterness to keep the malt sweetness balanced without shifting the beer into hop-forward territory.

Citrus Presence

Mandarin provides the wildcard, a fresh, juicy accent that cuts through the toasted malt and gives the beer its Puerto Rican-inspired personality.

Finish

The finish is described as rounded, smooth, clean and refreshing, with a subtle citrus note lingering after the malt fades.

At 5.4% ABV, it also sits in a comfortable range for an Oktoberfest-style lager: flavorful enough to carry the malt profile while remaining approachable for a long afternoon or evening of celebration.

What to Expect From Bávara Märzen

Don’t approach Bávara expecting a textbook German Märzen.

Instead, expect the recognizable toasted malt and smooth lager character of the style with a brighter, more playful finish. The mandarin component is what separates this release from a straightforward Oktoberfest lager and gives Takabrú an opportunity to put its own stamp on the tradition.

For drinkers who enjoy classic malt-forward lagers but wouldn’t mind a touch of citrus freshness, this could be one of the more interesting Oktoberfest releases to try this season.

Best Enjoyed With

The toasted malt and citrus combination makes Bávara particularly versatile with food. Bratwurst, roasted pork, schnitzel, pretzels with mustard, grilled chicken and sausages should all work well, while the mandarin character could make it especially good alongside richer Puerto Rican dishes where a little citrus brightness helps cut through the fat.

Bávara Märzen Availabilty

Bávara Märzen will be available on draft at Cervecería Takabru located at Plazoleta 169 in Guaynabo.

PRBG Final Pour

Bávara Märzen isn’t trying to recreate Bavaria pint for pint.

Takabrú takes the toasted malt, smooth lager character and festive spirit associated with Märzen and gives it a Puerto Rican accent through an unexpected touch of mandarin.

At 5.4% ABV and 33 IBU, it looks built for exactly what an Oktoberfest beer should encourage: ordering another round, sharing a table and enjoying the celebration.

Or, as Takabrú puts it: “Festive tradition in your glass.”
